Market at the Food Bank 2014

Last week it felt like spring had finally arrived in the typical Cleveland mix of rain followed by heat followed by more rain and a cold snap. And that means the spring fundraising season is in full swing. This is one of my favorite times of year. When weather finally breaks we all hit our favorite outdoor patio and there is always a good event (for a great cause!) on the calendar.

First up this month was Market at the Food Bank to raise money for Harvest for Hunger. For the third year in a row this event was held in the massive Greater Cleveland Food Bank on South Waterloo Rd. The space that is usually used to sort and distribute food for over 700 programs in 6 counties was transformed into a wandering feast of food, beverages, raffle and incredible silent auction items.

The husband and I quickly met up with Jen, Matthew, Alicia and Michele (Alicia's mom) and began working our way around the large facility sipping and tasting as we went. Favorites included:

Anna in the Raw
tomato compressed watermelon w/ kalamata dust & feta

AMP 150
chilled local pea soup w/ creme fraiche, lemon oil

Pearl of the Orient
strip steak sauteed w/ carrots, celery, scallion in a hoisan garlic sauce

Pickwick & Frolic
manchego risotto cake w/ smoked tomato sauce

Fear's Confections
hand-dipped dark chocolate caramels

Cleveland Marriott Downtown at Key Center
ohio city pasta w/ roasted root vegetables, almonds, goat cheese & brown butter

There were a ton (not kidding) of desserts this year but Melt Bar & Grilled killed it with a twist on the childhood favorite, Rice Krispy Treats. In lieu of Rice Krispies they made marshmallow cereal kabobs using Cap'n Crunch, Fruit Loops and Cocoa Puffs. Well played.

If you haven't been over to the Food Bank to donate or volunteer you must. It makes for a great experience with friends, family or co-workers to give back to our community. Check out their website to learn how you can help.

The Greater Cleveland Food Bank is the largest hunger relief organization in Northeast Ohio having provided nearly 39 million meals in 2013 to hungry people in Cuyahoga, Ashtabula, Geauga, Lake, Ashland & Richland Counties.
Market at the Food Bank is the signature fundraising event of the GCFB's annual Harvest for Hunger campaign, a community-wide food and funds drive and effort of four area food banks.

::I received two tickets to this event c/o the Greater Cleveland Food Bank via Clue into Cleveland. As always, all musings are my own::
